How often should children go to the dentist?

We recommend that you bring your children in to see us every six months.

Your child’s oral health forms an important part of their overall wellbeing, which is why it is essential that you help them to take care of their teeth and gums from an early age. We provide a range of dental services for children and love treating our youngest patients. Here’s where we can help keep your little one’s oral health on track…

We do check-ups and cleans

One of the best things you can do for your child’s long-term dental health is to bring them in for regular dental check-ups and cleans. During these appointments, your child’s dentist will clean and remove plaque and tartar from the surface of your child’s teeth. Their teeth will also be thoroughly examined, and the dentist will check for any dental problems and abnormalities so that they can be treated as soon as possible. Dental check-up appointments are also a good time for your dentist to explain and demonstrate proper oral hygiene techniques.

We recommend that you bring your child in for a check-up and clean every six months. This will allow your dentist to detect any oral health issues early on when they can generally be easily treated. It is a good idea to start the routine of regular check-ups when your child’s first tooth erupts, which is usually between six months and a year old.

We provide dental sealants

A dental sealant is a type of thin, plastic coating that is placed on the grooves of the chewing surfaces of the teeth at the back of the mouth. Dental sealants are a great option for children because they protect the back teeth from food particles and bacteria that can get stuck in hard-to-reach areas of the mouth.

We generally recommend placing dental sealants on your children’s teeth as soon as their permanent molars erupt. This can happen anywhere between the ages of six and 12 years old. It is best to have sealants applied as soon as possible after your child’s molars come in in order to provide optimal protection.

The procedure of applying dental sealants does not cause any pain. Your child’s dentist will simply clean and dry the teeth before coating them with a special gel. The teeth are then brushed with a sealant resin, which is either tooth-coloured or clear.

Your child’s dental sealants should last for a very long time, often as long as 10 years. Every time you bring your little one in for a check-up, the dentist will have a look at the sealants to ensure that they are still in good condition.

We offer mouthguards

One of the children’s dental services that we offer for children is customised mouthguards for protection during sports. Mouthguards are very helpful in preventing dental emergencies, especially if your child plays sports that put them at risk of injury.

Mouthguards help to protect the teeth and mouth against hard blows and falls, reducing the risk of injury to the jaw, tongue, teeth and face. The best option is to have a customised mouthguard made by your dentist because they provide the best fit and better protection than over-the-counter products.

If your child participates in activities like hockey, rugby, cycling or skating, we recommend that you come in and see us. We can fabricate a mouthguard to properly cover the teeth and gums and will explain exactly how best to take care of the dental device.

If you would like to make an appointment for your child, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. We love taking care of our littlest patients and provide a wide range of dental services.
