Take care of your mouth for the sake of your overall health.
When it comes to enjoying general wellness, it is important that you take care of your whole body. This includes your mouth, teeth, gums and tongue. By looking after your mouth, it is possible to prevent a range of problems, including bad breath, tooth decay, gum disease and tooth loss. Read on to find out about some of the most important oral health habits and facts worth knowing…
Oral hygiene can’t be rushed
Although everyone wants healthy, bright and beautiful teeth, it is important to understand that it takes time to achieve the ideal smile. There are a few habits that you should adopt in order to optimise your oral health. Firstly, take time when brushing and flossing your teeth — plaque can be difficult to remove from the surface of your teeth and along your gumline. Ideally, you should brush your teeth twice a day for two minutes each time. You should also floss daily and be mindful of cleaning between all of your teeth — this process may take some time to complete. Consider finishing your routine by rinsing with an anti-bacterial mouthwash.
Proper techniques are essential
Regular brushing and flossing are key to maintaining your oral hygiene, but your technique is just as important as the frequency with which you clean your teeth. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush that fits your mouth properly, and place it at a 45-degree angle towards to gum line. Brush your teeth in short back-and-forth strokes, and be sure to clean all the surfaces of your teeth, as well as your tongue.
When it comes to flossing, use a piece about as long as your arm as this will allow you to have a proper grip to get between every tooth. Gently slide the floss between each tooth all the way down to the gum line. Use an up-and-down movement when flossing to get rid of plaque and food particles.
See your dentist regularly
One of the best things you can do for your oral health is to see your dentist regularly. It is advisable to have a dental check-up and professional teeth clean every six months. Your dentist is trained to identify and treat a broad range of oral diseases and issues and will be able to pick up on any potential problems before they become more complicated down the line. By seeing your dentist regularly, it is often possible to avoid complicated and expensive dental work.
Your dentist can also address any questions or concerns that you have regarding your oral health or hygiene habits. If you are not sure whether or not your brushing and flossing techniques are correct, your dentist can provide you with tips and demonstrations.
